The medium format 4to atlas contained some 70 maps focusing on the southern part of Indian and the Tanasserium Province, or Burma. The atlas was engraved an printed in London by J. Walker, but seems to have been issued only in Madras, India, by J.
Pharoah and Company. The atlas claims to have been "reduced from the Grand Trigonometrical Survey of India," and, in fact the survey did provide a framework for the atlas, but little of the actual cartographic detail. The atlas is rather novel in that it has universal scale of 16 miles to the inch 1 : for most of its regional maps. In addition to its regional maps, the atlas also contained 21city plans. These plans are some of the only obtainable midh century maps of many South Indian cities.
It also contained a rare map of Singapore. Very good. Minor foxing. Minor wear along original fold line. My wife and I spent all of April and part of May, in Bangalore making the final arrangements for the adoption of our daughter from St. Michael's Home and getting to know some of the people and the region. We spent most of our time in Bangalore, a major city in the state of Karnataka in southern India.
Although it is now called Bengaluru, I will always think of it as Bangalore. I was able to spend a weekend in Mysore, and my wife spent two days enduring the May heat in Madras.
This site is my attempt to document some of our experiences and observations of India. I have included some of my photographs of India throughout the site. Bangalore is relatively temperate. It is about six degrees from the equator, so the sun is very strong. However, its altitude keeps it from getting as hot as much of the rest of southern India. Bangalore is a truly beautiful city, full of flowering trees and other plants that we'd never even heard of before. It is often called "The Garden City".
Trust me, they have little in common, especially when it comes to gardens. Bangalore wins easily. It is quite a large city, with a population of approximately six million people. We found the people to be very friendly and extremely interested in anything we could tell them about America. Bangalore is well known for its many software companies and has earned the additional sobriquet "Silicon Valley of India". Although certainly not true for all of India, many of the people we met who had a full grade school education could speak English, had a Bachelor's degree, and were working toward or already had a Master's degree.
